Treatment Philosophy

Have you ever received a massage and found yourself wondering why the therapist was using a particular technique? Or felt uncomfortable because the pressure was too deep or too shallow but didn’t feel you could speak up?

Brian’s approach prioritizes you and your body rather than following a preset treatment plan. Everyone’s needs are vastly different, and they can even change from week to week for the same client! In short, we respond to what we find during treatment. If an area is slow to respond, we might stay there longer; if it releases quickly, we can move on to other areas right away.

More pain does not equal more gain! While deep pressure can be a useful tool, a cornerstone of Brian’s approach is recognizing that we are treating your nervous system just as much as we are treating your muscles and fascia. If your body feels threatened, even subconsciously, it won’t release tension effectively. This may mean adjusting the pressure several times during the session. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to relax and take a deep breath into the sensation. If you feel the need to flinch or tense up, we may be working against your body instead of with it. Brian’s comfortable using deep pressure, but maximum pressure isn’t always the best choice.

Consent is crucial. It's important that you understand what we're doing and why, so you can feel safe during the treatment. If you're apprehensive throughout the session, it will be difficult for your body to relax! If we try something that makes you uncomfortable, that’s perfectly fine; we can adjust our approach, slow down, or try something different.

Sadly, many people have experienced not being heard in their healthcare, which can lead to feelings of nervousness during new appointments. Brian’s practice is informed by this awareness, making it essential for you to feel empowered to ask for what you need during treatment. It’s vital that you understand our methods and feel safe throughout the process. If we need to change our approach, please know I won't be offended—it’s your body we’re treating! I encourage my clients to request changes often, as this can help build trust in the therapeutic relationship.

Alongside the direct manipulation of muscles, fascia, and joints, we also explore the sensations in your body and work on enhancing your body awareness. Brian often provides cues to help you notice and describe sensations as they arise or guides you through different breathing techniques to improve your response to treatment.

Bodywork is for everyone. We all have bodies and can benefit from bodywork, regardless of shape, size, age, or fitness level. Different individuals may have vastly different needs during a massage treatment, and that’s completely okay.

Brian has a strong background in science and is committed to evidence-based practice. We will base any ongoing treatment plans on results. If we try an approach that doesn’t work, it simply means we’ve learned something and can adapt quickly. If Brian doesn’t have the skills or experience necessary to address your symptoms, he is more than happy to refer you to other practitioners who can help you find the care you need.
