What is Massage Therapy?
Massage involves treating the soft tissues and joints of the body. This can include applying pressure to help release muscles through various techniques, such as gliding movements or slow, specific compressions. Slow holds may be used to release fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles. Sometimes, it’s helpful to move a joint or limb while applying pressure to a muscle, incorporate stretches, or guide you to contract and relax specific areas of your body. Additionally, treatment can include mobilizations for joints, which involve gentle oscillations or sustained pressure in areas of restriction rather than the forceful adjustments typical of chiropractic care.
In treatment, we focus on two main goals:
1. Direct Impact: By manipulating muscles, fascia, connective tissue, and joints, we can directly affect the tissues, muscles, and structures within the body.
2. Indirect Impact: Massage also allows us to explore your body’s sensations and develop skills in body awareness. This exploratory aspect means we don’t always know how certain techniques will feel until we try them! Brian will often prompt you to notice sensations that arise during treatment. Building these skills of body awareness can be beneficial in your daily life.
What do I wear during treatment?
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and safe! Surprisingly, it’s possible to perform full massage treatments over clothing. If you prefer to remain clothed for any reason, that’s completely okay.
Alternatively, you can wear a piece of clothing like a bra, sports bra, shorts, or a tank top. If wearing such layers makes you feel more comfortable, that’s also perfectly fine. In fact, some treatments may benefit from this, as it allows you to move around without the risk of exposure.
Of course, many techniques involve skin contact. If you choose to undress, you’ll be covered with sheets and a blanket on the massage table, and we’ll only uncover the areas we’re working on, keeping the rest securely covered.
If you have any questions about clothing or what to wear, please feel free to reach out anytime.
